TECHNICAL SEMINARS

Refining Process Services, Inc. provides technical training seminars in the field of petroleum refining, also called oil refining. The modern petroleum refinery has a series of core process units that create clean gasoline and low sulfur diesel fuel. The first oil refinery unit is crude oil desalting. The desalter removes salt, water and other contaminants from crude oil prior to distillation in an atmospheric tower. The fractions recovered from the atmospheric distillation tower include naphtha, kerosene, diesel and bottoms liquid called atmospheric resid. This material is fractionated via vacuum distillation into gas oil and vacuum resid.

Raw gasoline recovered from petroleum consists of light naphtha and heavy naphtha. Light naphtha is processed through an isomerization unit and heavy naphtha is processed in a catalytic reforming unit or reformer so that gasoline octane is improved. Kerosene is blended into jet fuel. Diesel fuel is treated in a hydrotreating unit or hydrotreater with catalyst and hydrogen to reduce sulfur level and improve quality. Gas oil is converted in fluid catalytic cracking and hydrocracking units or hydrocracker into gasoline and diesel. Light olefins from the fluid catalytic cracker are processed in either HF acid (hydrofluoric acid) or sulfuric acid alkylation units. Vacuum resid is processed in delayed coking units which convert heavy oil from crude into lighter products.

To learn more about this vital industry, Refining Process Services offers a series of technical training seminars. All programs are offered in the form of public seminars.   Most programs are also offered for in-house presentation at a client location.  Select theOn-Site Training tab for  more information.  A listing of core seminars is provided below. HOW TO BLEND GASOLINE AND DIESEL IN REFINERIES

This comprehensive two day program will cover all aspects of Gasoline and Diesel blending from the fundamentals to advanced techniques.  The material covers enough of the science to allow you to spot bad data, but really focuses on the practical knowledge you need for day to day blending.   Beginners will appreciate the step by step nature of the program, and experienced Blenders will learn some highly advanced techniques to generate huge returns from tiny improvements that add up over time.  In addition, the Soft Skills training is very helpful when it comes time to sell your ideas and leverage Blending to advance your career.

All discussion topics are reinforced by classroom exercises in www.netBlend.net, state of the art cloud based blending software from Haverly Systems Inc.   No cumbersome installation, problems with macros, or updates are required with www.netBlend.net – it is accessed through Internet Explorer simply by opening www.netBlend.net and logging in with your unique username and password.  NetBlend uses GRTMPS, a total refinery optimization engine to optimize blends.  This software is infinitely more powerful than Excel Solver and can therefore find more profitable, non-intuitive blends.  Custom Component and Product Libraries are saved for each user and can be shared with others.  Users can easily upload the latest component and product test results from Excel, build an optimized blend, and download the Blend Report in Excel.  Note that attendees receive a free one month subscription to the blending software www.netBlend.net from Haverly Systems Inc and a copy of the program material.

The program was developed and will be presented by Mr. Lance Ulrich (ex-Koch, CHS, Phillips 66, Valero, AspenTech, one of the world’s leading experts in blending operations and technology.  This program will allow participants to interact closely with both the speaker and others in attendance to exchange information on blending techniques.  Participants should bring their laptop computer with Excel and Internet Explorer installed to run exercises and blend optimizers – EXCEL SOLVER IS NOT REQUIRED.

This program is designed for those involved in clean product trading, fuels blending, and storage terminal operation.  However, Petroleum refiners, petrochemical and automotive industry personnel as well as those from fuel product testing organizations, instrumentation and automation companies, refined product marketing organizations, and government agencies responsible for fuel regulations will also find this program quite informative and very useful.

PROGRAM SPEAKER

Lance Ulrich has over 26 years of experience in the Petroleum Refining Industry.  The first half of his career was spent in the Engineering and Operations side of the business as a Process Engineer, Project Engineer/Manager, PSM Coordinator and Frontline Operations/Turnaround Supervisor.  The second half has been concentrated in Planning and Economics, first as a Models Engineer, then Operations Planner, Planning Manager, Director and VP of Optimization.  Lance retired from corporate life in 2016 and now runs his own training and consulting business, RefineryU LLC, which concentrates on Lance's core, planning and economics, and offers both public and private workshops around the globe.  Since he is an extreme extrovert, teaching is a natural fit and Lance enjoys every minute of it.  His goal is to teach, not just the technical concepts, but also the soft skills to break through resistance and get your ideas implemented as well as advance your career.  Lance has a BS and MS in Chemical Engineering from Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana.
