Refining Process Services, Inc. provides technical training seminars in the field of petroleum refining, also called oil refining. The modern petroleum refinery has a series of core process units that create clean gasoline and low sulfur diesel fuel. The first oil refinery unit is crude oil desalting. The desalter removes salt, water and other contaminants from crude oil prior to distillation in an atmospheric tower. The fractions recovered from the atmospheric distillation tower include naphtha, kerosene, diesel and bottoms liquid called atmospheric resid. This material is fractionated via vacuum distillation into gas oil and vacuum resid.

 

Raw gasoline recovered from petroleum consists of light naphtha and heavy naphtha. Light naphtha is processed through an isomerization unit and heavy naphtha is processed in a catalytic reforming unit or reformer so that gasoline octane is improved. Kerosene is blended into jet fuel. Diesel fuel is treated in a hydrotreating unit or hydrotreater with catalyst and hydrogen to reduce sulfur level and improve quality. Gas oil is converted in fluid catalytic cracking and hydrocracking units or hydrocracker into gasoline and diesel. Light olefins from the fluid catalytic cracker are processed in either HF acid (hydrofluoric acid) or sulfuric acid alkylation units. Vacuum resid is processed in delayed coking units which convert heavy oil from crude into lighter products.

CATALYTIC REFORMING PROCESS TECHNOLOGY

 

The catalytic reforming process is critical to the overall economic balance of the modern petroleum refinery. This program has been developed by Refining Process Services to provide an in-depth, yet practical review of the current technology available in the processing areas of catalytic reforming and naphtha pretreating. The speakers will cover topics ranging from the basic process chemistry through commercial unit operations. The interactions between feedstock types, yields, product quality, catalysts, cycle length, and operating process variables will be explained. In addition, unit monitoring, troubleshooting, catalyst regeneration, and process evaluation methods will be discussed. A thorough understanding of these principles and techniques is necessary to optimize the performance of the catalytic reformer and, ultimately, to maximize the profitability of the unit.

The program will be presented by two very knowledgeable instructors: Mr. Barry Robinson of Husky Energy and Mr. Steve Philoon of UOP. The presenters have a wealth of experience covering all aspects of catalytic reforming process technology.

This program has been designed for refinery staff involved in catalytic reforming unit operation, process engineering, and unit monitoring. The program will also benefit process R & D personnel, as well as sales and technical service engineers from catalyst suppliers. Personnel from design and construction companies, process control vendors, and refining equipment suppliers will also find the program beneficial. Participants are invited to bring questions and any non-proprietary operating experiences for discussion during the program and the open forum sessions which are scheduled at the end of each day.

PROGRAM SPEAKERS

Steve Philoon is a Principal Platforming Technology Specialist II for UOP LLC. His current responsibilities include providing direct support to a set of globally distributed customers, participating in technology development projects bringing commercial perspectives to the efforts. He also contributes to engineering review meetings for new units and revamps and conducts on-site troubleshooting and unit performance assessments. During his 37 years with UOP he has held positions in Research and Development, Technical Service, Information Technology and Engineering Services. He holds a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin – Madison.

Barry A. Robinson is a Senior Staff Process Engineer for Husky Energy Lima Refinery. His duties include capital project development and mentoring of process engineers. Barry was previously employed by Sunoco, BP, and Marathon in their Corpus Christi , Toledo, and Detroit refineries where he provided technical service, capital project development and execution, process unit commissioning, and process engineering management services. He has experience in catalytic reforming, hydrotreating, aromatic extraction, para/ortho xylene production, fluid catalytic cracking, delayed coking, sulphur recovery, and light ends separation processes. Barry has performed work on over $800 million worth of capital projects, including six FCC revamps and a grassroots delayed coker/sulphur recovery complex. He also spent six years employed by an engineering contractor. Barry spent two years in technical service coverage of both a semi-regen UOP Platformer in BTX operation and an Amoco Ultraformer cyclic unit in motor gasoline operation. In addition he spent three years managing technical service coverage of a UOP CCR unit in gasoline operation. Barry holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from The Ohio State University, and a MBA from Bowling Green State University.
